Canadese première First Man tijdens het Toronto International Film Festival
FIRST MAN, de nieuwe film van regisseur Damien Chazelle (La La Land, Whiplash) over het leven van astronaut Neil Armstrong, is deze week in Canada in première gegaan tijdens het Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Naast een officiële première was er een speciale vertoning op zondag jl. waarbij o.a. Damien Chazelle en Rick en Mark Armstrong, de zonen van Neil Armstrong, aanwezig waren en een toespraak gaven tot het publiek voorafgaand aan de vertoning.
Mark Armstrong zei: “When they started this project, Damien and the screenwriter Josh Singer started with the only authorized biography that our dad ever participated in called First Man, and it’s a very heavy, dense book, but it’s full of detail, and that’s where they started. They spent two or three years after that going deep, getting the details in between the chapters, in between the words, in between the paragraphs, and I’m here to tell you that they got it right. And we absolutely would not be here today if they hadn’t, so I’m really grateful to them.”
Bij de première die maandagavond plaatsvond waren ook hoofdrolspelers Ryan Gosling en Claire Foy aanwezig.

In navolging van het succes van hun met zes Oscars bekroonde hitfilm La La Land werken Oscarwinnend regisseur Damien Chazelle en steracteur Ryan Gosling opnieuw samen. FIRST MAN vertelt het boeiende verhaal van de NASA-missie die als doel had mannen naar de maan te sturen, met de nadruk op astronaut Neil Armstrong en de periode van 1961 tot en met 1969. Deze indringende persoonlijke vertelling is gebaseerd op het boek van James R. Hansen, en laat zien wat Armstrong en heel Amerika er wel niet voor over hadden om één van de gevaarlijkste expedities in de geschiedenis een succes te laten worden.
Verder met o.a. Claire Foy (The Crown, The Girl in the Spider’s Web), Jason Clarke (Everest, Zero Dark Thirty), Kyle Chandler (Bloodline, Manchester by the Sea), Patrick Fugit (Gone Girl), Ciaran Hinds (Red Sparrow, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), Corey Stoll (Ant-Man, Midnight in Paris), Pablo Schreiber (Orange is the New Black, 13 Hours).
Het scenario is afkomstig van Oscarwinnaar Josh Singer (Spotlight), en productie is in handen van Wyck Godfrey & Marty Bowen (The Twilight Saga, The Fault in Our Stars) en hun Temple Hill Entertainment productiemaatschappij, samen met Chazelle. Isaac Klausner (The Fault in Our Stars) treedt op als uitvoerend producent. DreamWorks Pictures co-financiert de film.
FIRST MAN draait vanaf 11 oktober in de bioscoop, ook in IMAX en Dolby Cinema.
